Highlights the role of Media & Media Studies Departments in Development of Democracy

Lahore:  Department of Mass Communication, Lahore College for Women University organized an interactive session with media experts and esteemed academians on the issue of “Democracy in Pakistan, Role of Media and Media Studies Departments” here on Monday at varsity student service centre.

According to details this seminar was held to highlight the importance of media and media studies departments in protection and promotion of democracy and democratic dispensation in Pakistan according to the spirit of constitution of Pakistan.  

Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar, Vice Chancellor, Lahore College for Women University, congratulated Dr. Anjum Zia for organizing such an event and highlighted the importance of media and media studies departments in protection and promotion of democracy and democratic dispensation in Pakistan according to the spirit of constitution of Pakistan. “We are producing the future of this democratic society by preparing the best journalists and media persons,” she stressed.

Earlier the seminar started with the name of Allah Almighty followed by an introduction to the seminar given by the host. Welcome Address was given by Ms. Faiza Latif, AP at Department of Mass Communication, highlighting the role of media in a democratic state.

Dr Anjum Zia, Chairperson Department of Mass communication Lahore College for Women University, also addressed the students. “Democracy and media go hand in hand. Media is the mirror of the society, whatever happens in the society cannot happen without a free independent media,” said Dr. Zia. She also explained students how media institutes played a role to promote productivity, professionalism, understanding with the society and media markets.

Dr Mughees ud Din Sheikh, Dean of School of Mass communication and media studies, University of Central Punjab, congratulated Dr. Anjum Zia for organizing such a wonderful seminar on such an issue. He shared many experiences and historic examples to make the students understand their importance in the society. “Democracy is not just to elect the right person but to be the right person who can stand up against them and not let wrong happen.”

Ms. Mobina Ali, head of Department of Political Sciences, International Relations and Pakistan Studies, LCWU, was also among the key speakers. “Democracy comes with tolerance. If your party didn’t come in power doesn’t means that you stand up against them, tolerate them and work together as a nation,” said Mobina Ali. Furthermore, she elaborated her point by telling how to use your vote rightly.

Salman Ghani, Duniya Media Group, defining democracy said, “democracy is when you can open up and say whenever your rights are being molested. Vote is your power and you have the power to elect your government who are afterwards answerable to you on their wrong doings.”

Akmal Somro, senior reporter City42, described the role of media in democracy saying “democracy is the essential element for the working of a free nation. Media institutes are playing the key role in preparing the future of media and hence the limestone of a democratic society.”
 
Documentary related to the issue under discussion was played for better understanding of the students. Souvenirs were given to all the prestigious guest and speakers and tea was served.

Students from departments of mass communication, International Relations and Political sciences participated in this session and valuable questions were asked which were fairly replied to by the speakers.
