Inter University/College Competition


Geography Department LCWU won the inter university/college quiz competition held at F.C. College on 3-12-2014. Two other participating teams were Govt. College for Women Gulberg, and Govt. College for Boys Township Lahore. Geography department LCWU’s team consisted of Maria Mumtaz, Maham Sultan and Rida Intazar. Our team answered all the questions correctly and won the first prize. The Chairman of Geography department F.C. College presented the prizes to the winners. The Geography department LCWU shone like a bright star and stood victorious at F.C. College! Congratulations LCWU!!

Seminar on Climate Change


Geography society organized a seminar on climate change on 21st Oct, 2014, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m in Student Service Center of Gender studies department. The seminar started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Hafiza Iqra Qayyum of BS Sem V, followed by an introduction to Climate change by Ms. Nausheen Mazhar, Incharge of Geography Society and and expert on climate change. After her introduction the famous documentary on climate change named “An Inconvenient Truth” by Albert Arnold Algore, former US Vice President, was shown to the students inorder to clarify their concepts about climate change. The seminar ended on time with a vote of thanks by Ms. Nausheen Mazhar, Incharge Geography Society. It was overall a great success.

Fund Raising Activities for Flood Victims


The Geographical society of LCWU organized a 2 day event to raise funds for the Flood victims. This event took place on 25th and 26th of September 2014 in the Geography department. A movie named “Khoobsurat” was shown to the students for fund raising. Stalls of homemade edibles, flowers, hair styling and mehndi were organized  by the students of Geography dptt. The society had raised a fund of Rs. 42,000 which was then submitted to the Director Student Affairs Mrs. Shireen Asad. All the students of the Geography Department worked as a team which resulted in a good fund collection.

Basic Life Support and Fire Safety Orientation Course


“As training for basic emergency situation, Geography society, LCWU in collaboration with Rescue 1122, organized a three days workshop on “Basic Life Support and Fire Safety Orientation Course”, from 28-30 April 2014. Honourable Dean, Dr.Bushra Khan along with Prof. Mrs.Bushra Sharif, HOD, Geography and Ms. Ruqaiya Bano, the Head of Basic Life Support (Rescue 1122) inaugurated the event. During this workshop the students and faculty were trained on how to act in critical situation including medical and fire emergencies.

The Students and faculty of LWCU from Geography, Chemistry, and Environmental sciences attended workshop with great enthusiasm. Workshop was a great success since it trained the students for basic emergency situation. Dean, the faculty of natural sciences, Dr. Bushra Khan appreciated Geography department for organizing one such vital workshop for the first time ever in any women’s university.”

Geography Awareness Week

Geography Awareness Week is celebrated round the globe in the third week of November every year. It is celebrated to enhance the importance of geography and create awareness among the people about this subject which is rightly known as the “Mother of Sciences”.

The Geography society of Lahore College for Women University organized the Geography Awareness Week (GAW) as a tradition for the revival of the subject of Geography from 2nd December, 2013 to 6th December, 2013. It was celebrated to create awareness among the students about the different aspects of Geography.
In this very week, the conducted such activities that aluminate the benefits of this crucial subject. Following are the activities that were organized.

Inauguration Day

Activity: Surface of the sun was observed by the H Alpha telescope.
The Lecture and activity ended at 12:30 p.m. and then a formal tea was organized for the Chief Guest outside the Seminar Hall.

Trip to PIA Planetarium

Date and Day: 6th December, 2013 - Friday
Departure Time: 09:30 a.m.
Arrival Time: 12:30 p.m.
The Geography Awareness Week was organized by the Geographical Society under the supervision of the Incharge of The Geography Society, Ms. Nausheen Mazhar along with the Faculty members of the Geography Department.
This Geography Awareness Week made many students aware of its vast scope as well as the advanced Geography and its application in other disciplines. It will also help them further in their course in the upcoming semesters.

Lecture on “Digital Cartography”

Geography Society arranged a Lecture on “Digital Cartography” by Dr. Ibitsam Butt Asst. Prof. at the Department of Geography in the University of the Punjab, on 27th May 2013. It was preceded by a warm introduction by the president of Geography Society.

Dr. Ibtisam addressed the students of BS Major Semester-IV and BS Geography Major Semester-II on the subject of modern map making techniques, paying particular attention to the opportunities offered by computer assisted technologies in the development of maps.The entire day was a great success since it helped the students acknowledge the significance of digital cartography in the modern world.

At the end Dr. Ibtisam was presented a bouquet of flowers and a souvenir  by the Head of Geography Department, LCWU as a token of appreciation.

 

Walk and Tree Plantation Ceremony

Geography Society celebrated Earth Day on 30th April, 2013 by arranging a walk around the campus to promote awareness amongst other students, followed by a Tree Plantation ceremony to promote the concept of a Greener Better Earth .

The Students of BS Major Semester-IV and BS Geography Major Semester-II took part in the walk with great enthusiasm holding posters made by them on the theme of Earth Day and chanted slogans of: “Save the Earth”, “Nurture Nature”, “Keep the Earth Clean and Green”.

The Walk ended at the department where a total of 20 plants were planted by the staff and students of Geography department to signify the importance of trees. The entire day was a great success since it helped the students acknowledge the significance of celebrating Earth Day.

Geography Awareness Week

 

Department of Geography, LCWU is celebrating "Geography Awareness Week". Honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Sabiha Mansoor, alongwith Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences, inaugurated "Geography Awareness Week". This week will be celebrated from 19th to 23rd  November. In the inauguration ceremony Prof. Sabiha Mansoor cut the ribbon, and flew balloons in air.
