In the spirit of providing an opportunity and platform to scholarly community across Pakistan, an International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (ICSDG 2022) is being held by the Office of Research,Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) and Directorate of Research, Lahore College for Women University, Lahore. The conference is scheduled to be held from 29th -31st March, 2022 at Lahore College for Women University, Lahore in collaboration with Qasim Ali Shah Foundation (QASF), Pakistan Science Foundation, SDGs Section of Ministry of Planning Development & Special Initiatives (MoP&SI) and SDGs Support Unit, Planning and Development Department, Government of Punjab.  The conference is targeting scholars, researchers and experts in the field of SDGs to meet, discuss, explore and exchange ideas in the rapidly developing need of the world. Therefore, the event will be an excellent networking opportunity for intellectuals as well as academia from all over the world. This conference will showcase research, policy, posters, projects, and students’ professional development from all different disciplines of both Social Sciences and Sciences.

Objectives
  • To provide a chance to multidisciplinary experts and high-level practitioners from around the world to exchange knowledge, ideas, experiences and expectations around the challenges involved with the SDGs.
  • To open a debate among the different stakeholders on solutions for a sustainable development to transform Pakistan at local and global level by a combination of keynote presentations by renowned experts, round tables and parallel sessions.
  • Raising global and national awareness on sustainable development challenges and the crucial role of strong global partnerships and cooperation as powerful enablers of the successful achievement of all the SDGs.
  • Bringing the problems and prospects of Pakistan on the agenda of the global and national stakeholders in the sustainable development field.
  • To provide intellectual guidance and scientific evidences to the challenges of SDGs, with a humanist and critical thinking, promoting research and education to build a fair global community and more sustainable society.
  • To identify the specific issues that need to be tackled in relation to the main implementation challenges related to SDGs.
  • To analyze the main opportunities and challenges for the different means of implementation to advance the SDGs agenda.
  • To showcase how the different means of implementation can promote the necessary transformative change. This will be illustrated through specific practical examples on the use of the tools to facilitate changes that have been successful.
  • Bringing together diversity of experiences from across the globe towards cooperation for change and bringing in the element of quality improvement in all the spheres of our life.
  • To draw lessons on differentiated responsibilities, appropriateness and transferability of different tools and approaches in different contexts but also on issues of scaling up and transitioning.
  • To facilitate and share research on different SDGs in Pakistan and other countries.
Scope of the Conference

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs, also known as the Global Goals) are 17 goals with 169 targets that all UN Member States have agreed to work towards achieving by the year 2030. They set out a vision for a world free from poverty, hunger and disease.
The SDGs aim to be relevant to all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the environment and tackling climate change. They have a strong focus on improving equity to meet the needs of women, children and disadvantaged populations in particular so that “no one is left behind”.
ICSDG will provide a platform for Pakistani academicians, professionals and international scholars to present and discuss the most recent insights, trends and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the field of Sustainable Development Goals. It will provide a platform for exchange of experiences and dialogue: inter-disciplinary, inter-scale, and inter-generational among the academia, international organizations, NGOs, public and private sectors. This will promote empirical and theoretical research about SDGs in Pakistan.
Expected outcomes of the event
  • The conference will connect Pakistani researchers and think tanks to the SDGs agenda through interdisciplinary discussions, improve their policy linkages and strengthen their research capacities.
  • The conference is expected to result in an abstract book capturing the conference's outputs and discussions, as well as research papers and policy briefs.
  • The conference will provide an opportunity to review inputs received from stakeholders, review missing inputs, brainstorm these inputs and allow government agencies and the SDGs Secretariat to review implementation issues regarding the SDG, as well as discuss how to move forward for future collaboration among agencies.
  • A conference report, including lessons from the case studies, video interviews, information briefs and other materials.
Relevance to the faculty and students’ needs
  • Pakistan was the first country to adopt SDGs 2030 agenda through a unanimous resolution of the Parliament of Pakistan. Pakistan has prioritized the SDGs which will enable us to join the league of upper middle-class countries by 2030 and for that we need more research and more informed policy. This conference will be an important milestone for achieving this objective.

  • The 2030 Agenda and the SDGs set a very ambitious vision for what humanity needs to accomplish by the year 2030. With just 9 years left, the UN has declared a Decade of Action; with an urgent call for accelerating efforts towards achieving the SDGs. Fundamental to these efforts is the awareness and dialogue to tackling global challenges and achieving the SDGs. The conference will be an important step towards this dialogue and is being held by collaboration of SDG units of governments Punjab and Pakistan and will deepen our understanding of the pathways that may contribute to SDGs.

  • SDGs are a relatively neglected area of emphasis in mainstream research in Pakistan. There is a dire need for creating awareness about and promotion of research in various SDGs. It is very important for the Pakistani academic community to assess the current state of the SDGs in the country and highlight its potential contributions to a better world. It is clear that the link between knowledge and action is not automatic, and needs to be cultivated, supported and steered to where it is most needed. The collaboration developed among researchers and policymakers by this conference will help bridge the gap.

  • The conference aims to provide a platform for academic community to get exposed to international research in the SDGs and highlight the various ways in which academics can help in achieving SDGs. This will provide them ideas for future research, allow them to interact and socialize with world-renowned researchers and professionals and enable research collaborations and further research alliances.

  • The conference will bring together the global experience and expertise of using universities as a way of achieving SDGs. Thus the conference in its broadest sense will include training and capacity building, communication and creating public awareness, scientific research, sharing and access to information and networking; emphasizing partnerships as a key strategy for achieving the SDGs.

Lahore is the city of wonders with a rich history of over a millennium. Lahore is the 2nd largest city of Pakistan and is capital of province of Punjab. Lahore is referred to as the cultural heart of Pakistan as it hosts most of the arts, cuisine, festivals, music, film-making, gardening and intelligentsia of the country. Its historical monuments are quite enthralling, as it was once the center of Mughal Emperors. It is an ancient city with plenty to explore and discover. Lahore has always been a centre for education, where 80 percent of Pakistan's books are published and remains the foremost centre of literary, educational and cultural activity in Pakistan. It is also very important from religious point of view as its hosts several shrines, temples and mosques dating back to hundreds of years.

The walled city of Lahore

“I am an unseen and uncharted life hidden inside thirteen giant gates, though some I have lost still I hold the glory of the bygone days and the possessions of the past which the rulers left behind in my streets and edifices. I am walled city, the old Lahore; I am the essence of life, heritage and culture”. The walled city of Lahore, which no doubt is among the oldest settlements, is a cosmos of monuments, havelis, cuisines, bazaars, culture and traditions and all these features make it a living heritage museum. This city is a marvel inside thirteen gates with a unique and matchless lifestyle. (http://walledcitylahore.gop.pk/walled-city-of-lahore/)
