Dr. Asifa Kamal

Associate Professor, Department of Statistics, LCWU
contribute on both national and international platforms. A turning point in my academic life came when I was awarded the Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of the Southampton, UK, funded by the Punjab Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. This opportunity not only enriched my research capabilities but also helped me build valuable international connections. In November 2019, I was selected under the Mevlana Faculty Exchange Program by the Higher Education Department of Turkey. I had the privilege of visiting Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, where I delivered a series of seminars to students and faculty members. This experience strengthened my commitment to cross-border academic collaboration. In the same year, I was honored to receive a USAID grant to attend the LISA 2020 Symposium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, organized under the University of Colorado Boulder’s project. This was a moment of professional recognition and growth. One of my achievements has been the establishment of the LISA-LCWU Stat Lab in collaboration with the LISA 2020 Global Network. As the coordinator of the lab, I have led initiatives to empower students especially women with practical statistical skills. Later, in May 2022, I received another fully-funded opportunity (including travel, boarding, and lodging) through USAID to visit KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana to attend symposium, under the LISA 2020 Sustainability Project. Among 29 countries who participated in the symposium, my talk won both the Best Talk and Best Executed Strategy Award.
In 2020, I received two grants through the International Statistical Institute (ISI): a grant for capacity-building workshops in Statistics, and also another grant funded by the World Bank (TFSCB) to organize a four-day event. This event was part of the 3rd LISA 2020 Symposium and also celebrated the International Year of Women in Statistics and Data Science (IYWSDS). My efforts were recognized globally. In 2021, USAID featured my story on their website titled “Training the Next Generation of Statisticians: Why Statistician Asifa Kamal is Leading a New Statistics Lab in Pakistan”. I also initiated two international collaborations: one with the University of the Colorado Boulder, USA, and another with Mizan Teppi University, Ethiopia, resulting in signed Letters of Intent (LoIs) in 2022 and 2023, respectively. In 2023, I won a grant from the Elsevier Mathematical Sciences Sponsorship Fund (MSFF) for my project titled “A Step Ahead towards Diversity and Inclusivity: Facilitating Learning of Basic Mathematics and Basic Statistics to Blind Girls at LCWU, Lahore”.
