Dr. Asma Shahid Kazi was nominated by university for the Teaching and Learning Cohort 1 in 2022. She has been associated with HESSA since she participated in the boot camp in May 2022. Before the training, she had considerable exposure as a trainer and teacher educator. She was also designing online learning courses at her university, the Teaching of Quran Translation is one such example. However, after being engaged with the HESSA mentors, and particularly the trip to UA, she realized the broader perspectives of the work she was doing. She learned the importance of adaptability in teaching methodologies to cater to diverse student needs, the significance of ongoing evaluation and improvement in teaching practices, and the essential role of soft skills in the learning process.
Since her return from the USA, she has incorporated learning principles that align with planning meaningful learning experiences for students and embraced the significance of diversity in today's student population. She has introduced a wide range of new practices that have enriched her understanding of effective teaching in higher education. She has proposed a peer-sharing initiative in her department, where teachers can exchange insights and experiences to collectively enhance teaching practices. Her enhanced ability to plan engaging lessons, consider diverse student needs, and leverage various teaching strategies will hopefully contribute to improved student engagement, learning outcomes, and overall satisfaction within the institution. She has implemented this learning in more than 50 training sessions, for training teachers in higher education across Punjab with HED, and in her own university.
Teaching and Learning at the department has been consciously improved. For this all the faculty worked on aligning their courses with the Program Learning Outcomes to the Course and Student Learning Outcomes. Teaching is done through collaborative and high impact practices, using active learning strategies. Students are encouraged to maintain portfolios and showcase their learning through exhibitions on Teaching Practicum, Art, Craft & Calligraphy, STEAM Education, Teaching of Science and other subjects. Undergraduate students also presented their research in an international conference arranged by the Faculty of Education, LCWU.To further strengthen teaching and learning, her department has also signed MoUs with organizations such as Red Marker Systems, to improve and switch to electronic assessments, and Leadership for Social Uplift, a youth platform for extracurricular activities, community service, and social leadership. She also inked a LoI with ElevatEd, to impart digital technology based skills to students and faculty. Moreover, communication is underway with a leading private school chain for student placement in teaching practice, with an explicit understanding for future employment opportunities for these students.
She has also initiated a student society by the name of “inspirations”, with series of talks and workshops with experts in the field, entrepreneurs, innovators and youth success stories, field trips and engaging activities.
She has served as the focal person for SDG2 for the last three years, due to her initiative of taking lead for food waste management and fighting hunger, through collaboration with RIZQ.
As the organizer of TEDxLCWU and TEDxLCWU Countdown, a global initiative for climate change, she organized events in the university, showcasing the research and work of faculty members as well. Keeping her vast experience in view, she has been entrusted with the responsibility as the head of Active Citizens Program at LCWU. Keeping the model of HESSA as prototype, she has designed trainings for facilitators and faculty members in blended mode, with eight weeks online, culminating in a five day intensive boot camp. She envisions sustainable and scalable projects for students and faculty, to build ethos, compassion, community building, and also to inculcate an attitude of gratitude. Her passion and vision are recognized and supported by the Directorate of Faculty Development and Internationalization at LCWU.
Her contribution has also been recognized by HESSA, and she was featured as a success story on the university of UTAH website for HESSA in October 2023. She was also invited to initiate student activity in her university to celebrate the International Day of Education in January 2024. Moreover, she also moderated a webinar on this event, under the theme “Advancing Peace through Education: Learning for Lasting Peace”. She was also invited by FM Radio at LCWU for a Podcast session with this perspective as well.
