INTRODUCTION
Our PhD programme in History Department is a four-year course of study & research (as per HEC policy) that enables the PhD researchers carrying out in-depth research in their areas of interest. In chronological terms, our research interests stretch from the early middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. In geographical terms, research areas include not only Pakistan studies but also covers international aspects with major focus on Asia, UK, USA, and Europe.
 
OBJECTIVES
The aim of the PhD programme is to get PhD scholars acquainted with the trends, techniques, and issues of historical writing in general, and their understanding in the historical context of national and international history of Pakistan and beyond. The programme further aims at developing PhD scholars into independent researchers by encouraging them to disseminate their work at seminars and conferences and by publishing their research in high-quality journals.
 
SCOPE REGARDING MARKET, SOCIAL AND EMPLOYMENT PERSPECTIVE
The experts with PhD degree in history can perform their prime roles as historian teachers, researchers, and archivists. Their employment opportunities may also find a place in museums and sites of historical significance.

COURSEWORK WITH SEMESTER BREAK-UP

Semester Breakup as per HEC’s existing policy and as implemented in LCWU requiring PhD courses of 18 credit hours in total. 03 Courses (of 3 credit hours each) in Semester I, and 03 Courses (of 3 credit hours each) in Semester II shall be taught out of the approved list of PhD courses. The total credit hours for coursework shall be 18 credit hrs.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

In order to secure PhD candidacy, every PhD student shall be required to pass a comprehensive examination in addition to the successful coursework completion. In case the student fails to pass the comprehensive test in first attempt, shall be allowed one more attempt to take the test.

DOCTORAL DISSERTATION/THESIS

As per existing (adopted) LCWU policy, PhD research Dissertation/Thesis shall carry 36 credit hours. The thesis shall be supervised by a PhD supervisor (as per HEC policy and LCWU’s rule), and may be a co-supervisor in case the need arises for his/her expert guidance in addition to the principal PhD Supervisor’s expertise. The word limit for PhD thesis shall be 80,000 to 120,000 words, i.e., excluding bibliography and appendices, but including footnotes, tables, diagrams and the list of references. The degree completion timeline shall be observed in accordance with HEC policy.

 

 

Code of Conduct facilitating PhD synopsis development

The continuing PhD student is expected to perform and qualify the following:

  • Submission of a list of bibliography of 80-100 books and 30-50 research articles about the main constructs of the student’s working topic of PhD
  • Based on the submitted bibliography, the PhD research synopsis shall be developed and submitted for its assessment through interview to the Departmental Doctoral Committee (comprising of Chairperson, and the PhD faculty members along with the Supervisor and/or co- Supervisor if any).
