Workshop Report ‘Data Visualization, Simulation & Optimization of Generalized Linear Models through Mathematica’ by LISA-LCWU
LISA-LCWU organized its first one-week workshop on ‘Data Visualization, Simulation & Optimization of Generalized Linear Models through Mathematica’ from 24th to 28th February, 2020, under the umbrella of Statistics department LCWU and in collaboration with LISA 2020 network.
The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Sharqa Hashmi (Assistant Professor, LCWU, Lahore). The workshop was well attended by MS and BS Statistics students and faculty members of LCWU, Lahore, Pakistan.The objective of the workshop was to familiarize students and faculty members with the application of the statistical software, Mathematica. It aimed to inform participants regarding the usage of the software efficiently. The workshop was conducted at two levels. The first level included, ‘Introduction’, ‘Data Visualization & Simulation’ and ‘Derivatives, Integration and handling equation’. The 2nd level included, ‘Generalized Linear Models’, and ‘Optimization & Likelihood’. The workshop may prove to be very helpful for attendees in their research work.
The closing ceremony was held on Feb 28th, 2020. Professor Dr. Ayesha Roohi (Former- Head of the department) was the chief guest of the event. At the end of the event, the participants were awarded the certificates.
In closing ceremony, Dr. Asifa Kamal (member LISA 2020) as coordinator of LISA-LCWU explained the role of LISA 2020 network of statistics and data science collaboration laboratories (“stat labs”). She told that these stat labs can be Engines for Development by training the next generation of collaborative statisticians and data scientists through teaching short courses and workshops to improve statistical skills and data literacy. Another objective of LISA-LCWU is to provide statistical consultancy to researchers and government or Non-government organizations. She also shared future plans of LISA-LCWU to conduct more workshops for the capacity building and training of students and faculty members of LCWU under the umbrella of Statistics Departments. She emphasized the importance of trainings in building statistical analysis capacity
Ms. Mahnaz Makhdum, Head of Department, gave a vote of thanks in which she thanked the participants for their cooperation and LISA-LCWU for organizing a successful event with the help of Statistical Society.

Due to which Nowadays people have started perusing online services as a career which seems quite interesting. In the light of this National vocational and technical training commission has started Prime Minister Hunarmand Pakistan Program “Skills for All”. Under the shade of NAVTTC, Department of mass communication Lahore college for women university has taken the onus to provide government funded programs to the students on a mass level.
This successful collaboration became the reason of interest, shown by a large number of students. Department of Mass Communication is now offering 2 courses; Documentary & film making and Digital marketing & SEO with the support of NAVTTC.
After the successful interviews by a large number of students, 25 students got enrolled in “Documentary and film making” and 50 students in “Digital Marketing & SEO”. Duration of these courses is 26 weeks with 520 total contact hours.
Film and Documentary:
This program is introduced in order to develop skills and techniques for successful performance in media sector. The trainers are highly professional to solve the tasks and problems of today’s generation. The trainees will be trained to have access on development opportunities. The trainees will also be getting support in their personal grooming to accept the future behaviour accordingly.

Department of Mass Communication, LCWU organized a
seminar on Raising Awareness about Role of Police in Society
Lahore: Department of Mass Communication, Lahore College for Women University, Lahore, organized a seminar for creating awareness on role of Police in society. Head of the Dolphin squad, SP Ayesha Butt, along five woman constables, Prof. Dr. Anjum Zia, head of Department of Mass Communication, Lahore College for Women University, Lahore, representatives of media, academia and a large number of students of LCWU were also present on this occasion.
SP Ayesha Butt told the participants of the seminar that the police department has taken strategic steps to maintain law and order situation in Punjab.
She further added that we could not forget the sacrifices of police personnel in the line of their duty. Moreover Constables Iqra Munir, Ammara, Nargis, Umme Kalsoom, Shahzadi Saleem also shared their experiences.
“Coming together and sharing of such rich experiences ranging from hard core policing functions to different thematic areas, augurs well for the utility of this retreat exercise,” Prof. Dr. Anjum Zia elaborated.
The speakers and participant also asked the government to increase financial, human and technical resources of police in all districts. They said that the number of lady police constables and female officers should be increased in all police stations in order to eliminate gender inequality.
At the end, Prof. Dr. Anjum Zia paid tribute to the sacrifices of police and also praised the role of Anti Riots Force, and efforts of women working in Police department.
The seminar was attended by a large number of teachers and students of LCWU and media persons.
Lahore: To express solidarity with the people of Indian occupied Kashmir in their legitimate struggle for right to self-determination, a seminar in the connection of Kashmir Solidarity Day was organized by the Department of Mass Communication, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) at its varsity auditorium. Mr. Syed Fakhar Imam, Chairman Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir as the chief guest of the occasion, along Uzma Kardar, Provincial Member Assembly and member Kashmir Committee, Mr. Salman Ghani, Senior Analyst and Journalist, Dunya TV, Mr. Sajjad Mir, Senior Journalist, Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza, VC LCWU, and Dr. Anjum Zia HoD Deptt. Of Mass Communication LCWU while expressing tribute to the unparalleled commitment of the Kashmiris for the attainment of the legitimate right to self-determination, highlighted grave human rights situation in the occupied valley and genocide being committed by Indian occupation forces.
Mr. Syed Fakhar Imam, Chairman Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir said that Kashmir was not an internal issue of India rather its solution was mandatory for regional stability and global peace. “Pakistan is stick on one stance and current government whole-heartedly supports the Kashmiris,” he opined. He said the sacrifices of Kashmiri people will not go in vain and they will see the dawn of independence one day.
Dr Bushra Mirza, VC of LCWU, was of the view that Kashmir was not internal problem of India but it was an international dispute. She said that the story of Kashmir was the story of Indian repression and conspiracies.
Speakers regretted the silence of international human rights organizations on the situation in occupied Kashmir. Uzma Kardar said the blatant human rights violations there were not tolerable to the Pakistani nation. “Kashmir is an unfinished agenda of partition, which has created instability in the South Asia since both India and Pakistan are the nuclear powers, So global community must take it seriously” said Mr. Sajjad Mir.
Salman Ghani, Senior Analyst and Journalist, Dunya TV, said that Modi was following Hindutva philosophy and it had also exposed India’s false claims of biggest democracy and secular state of the world. He said that Pakistan was countering India successfully at international forums.
Salman Abid, Senior Journalist and columnist was also of the view that BJP government was implementing philosophy of extremist Hindu organization RSS. He said that the present crisis in Kashmir had vindicated two-nation theory that the demand for the separate homeland by the Muslims was justified. Dr. Anjum Zia, HoD of Mass Communication Department said that India should stop denying ground realities, must come out of illusions and accept the fact that it cannot suppress the voice of Kashmiris with brute force and conspiracies. She further criticized the Indian media for being obsessed with enmity of Pakistan.
In her concluding remarks, Dr Bushra Mirza, VC of LCWU expressed her solidarity with the people of Kashmir and thanked the participants. Kashmir is the jugular vein of Pakistan and the prevailing situation demands unity in ranks of people from all walks of life to effectively and forcefully raise the plight of Kashmiri people at international level, said the VC

Study tour of BFA-III, was arranged to Pattern Making and Stitching unit of key and Emms Pvt. Ltd Faisalabad on 08-02-2020(Saturday) under supervision of Miss Samina Suppra ( Lecturer Craft and Textile Design department LCWU Jhang campus).
Students learn how pattern is made from specification sheet received from customer and then moved to GGT, where size up gradation and printing is done. Students learn fabric cutting through straight knife cutter and take introduction of different industrial sewing machines.

THREE DAYS WORKSHOP ON “SURVEY DATA AND PANEL DATA ANALYSIS IN STATA”

The Department of Economics organized a three-day workshop on ‘Survey Data and Panel Data Analysis in STATA’ from 29th January to 31st January. The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Muhammad Azmat Hayat (Assistant Professor, University of Punjab). The participants of the workshop included MS Economics students and faculty members from the Economics Department, Statistics Department and the Mass Communication Department.
The main objective of the workshop was to familiarize students and faculty members with the application of one of the latest statistical software, that is, STATA. The workshop aimed to inform participants regarding the usage of the software as well as its econometric relevance. The workshop played a vital role in providing a stepping stone for students and faculty members in the facilitation of their research work.
The workshop ended on Friday, 31st January. Dr. Tahira Tauheed, Head of Department, gave a vote of thanks in which she thanked the participants for their cooperation and the Economics Society for organizing such a successful event.
Dr. Tahira Tauheed stated that the Economics Departments plans to further conduct a number of workshops for the capacity development of the faculty members and the students. At the end of her address, Dr. Tahira Tauheed presented Dr. M. Azmat with a token of appreciation.
