REPORT OF PUNJABI POETRY RECITATION
An event on Punjabi Poetry Recitation was held in the Student Service Centre of LCWU on Thursday 10th August, 2017. The event was organized by the Punjabi Department of LCWU. Ms. Fakhara Shuja, Ex-Head of Punjabi Department, Govt. Post Graduate College for Women, Samanabad was invited as a Chief Guest. Senior faculty members and students from different departments attended the event.
Mother Language Day observed at LCWU
20th Feb 2017: Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) observed International Mother Language day to underline the importance of mother languages for quality education and linguistic diversity. After a seminar by the Punjabi Department on the topic students and teachers organized a walk for the awareness.
“Mother languages in a multilingual approach are essential components of quality education, which is itself the foundation for empowering women and men and their societies”, said by Vice Chancellor LCWU Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar on this occasion.
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 and proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism.
International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage.
All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues served not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.
Vice Chancellor LCWU Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar said that UNESCO celebrating International Mother Language Day (IMLD) today i:e February 21, under the theme “Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education”. To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. It is through the mastery of the first language or mother tongue that the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are acquired. Local languages, especially minority and indigenous, transmit cultures, values and traditional knowledge, thus playing an important role in promoting sustainable futures.
In his special lecture Dr. Naveed Shujaa, assistant professor Lahore Medical and Dental College, said that while using the second language, our body receives cartisol harmon which causes fatness and other complications as well.
Dr Samina Batool, Assistant Professor and Head of Punjabi Department receives award for her book titled
Dr Samina Batool, Assistant Professor and Head of Punjabi Department receives award for her book titled"Mudhlay Mughalia Doar da Punjabi Adab". Masood Khadarposh runs annual competition of different categories for writers,singers and poets of Punjabi Language.Dr Samina Batool has been awarded 3rd prize in the category of research for the year 2015.
A Comparative Significance of Mother Language
On 23rd May 2014 a Seminar was organized by Punjabi department on the topic of “A Comparative Significance of Mother Language”. In this lecture the resource person was Dr. Naveed Shuja (PhD Bio Chemistry). It was concluded that speaking other than mother tongue creates stress in human brain whereas the speaker of the mother tongue remains out of language stress.
Debating Competition
Punjabi Department participated in Debating Competition held by KE on 7thMay 2014.
Punjabi Department secured 3rd position in the debating competition held by UET All Pakistan championship on 10th March 2014.
Skit Competition
Punjabi Department participated in a Skit Competition held by the Gender Studies department LCWU on 5th March 2014 (Women International Day) and secured 2nd position.
Mother Language Day
The faculty members & students of Punjabi Department participated actively in a Walk on 21st Feb 2014 to mark Mother Language Day. This walk showed the enthusiasm of students and faculty members. This event was widely covered by local print and electronic media.
Debating Competition
Punjabi Department participated in the debating completion held by FJMC on 12th Feb 2014.
Tapa &Mahia competition
The students of Punjabi department participated in Tapa &Mahia competition organized by Masood Khadar Posh Trust on 15th Feb 2014.
Punjabi zuban di ahmiatte Canadian Punjabi Poetry
On 8th Jan 2014 a lecture was organized by the department of Punjabi on the topic of Punjabi zuban di ahmiatte Canadian Punjabi Poetry. This lecture was delivered by Mr. Sukhindar (Canada),Prof. Amjad Ali Shakir and Parveen Malik. At the end Saeed Murli Chohan entertained the audience with his humorous poetry.
Drama on Heer Waris Shah
Punjabi Dramatic Society organized drama on Heer waris Shah on 19th march 2013 under the supervision of Dr Samina Batool. Miss Hina khan coordinated the drama activities.
Waris Shah was a Punjabi Sufi poet, renowned for his contribution to Punjabi literature. He is best known for his seminal work Heer Ranjha, based on the traditional folk tale of Heer and her lover Ranjha. Waris Shah is also called Shakespeare of the Punjabi Language because of his great poetic love story, Heer Ranjha.The drama was based on Qisa Heer which was very much appreciated by the audience.
A walk on Mother’s Language Day
A walk was arranged by Dr Samina Batool, HoD Punjabi Department at Mother’s Language Day on 21st February 2013 from Bhushra Mateen Building to Gangaram Building.The Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Sabiha Mansoor inaugurated walk and appreciate Dr Samina Batool, for organizing this walk. The students and faculty have carried Chart paper. For the promotion of Punjabi Language slogans were chanted by the students. City 42 and 10 Leading Newspapers have given coverage on this occasion namely Lokai, Bhulaka, Nawa-e-Waqt, Daily Pakistan, Awaz, Daily Nae baat,The News, Pakistan observer, The Nation & Daily Times. The same day Dr samina Batool & students of Punjabi Department participated in Walk From Press Club to Assembly Hall.
Farewell & Welcome party
Farewell & Welcome party was organized by Dr Samina Batool on 4th March 2013 In which student of BS & MS participated.
Sports day
The Department of Punjabi have participated in the Sports day held on 21st March, 2013. The students took part in different games and won medals and awards. The students of BS Session (2010-2014) have won 1st prize in Cricket & 2nd prize in Tug of war.
