Dr. Asma Shahid Kazi, an Associate Professor at the Department of Elementary and Teacher Education, Faculty of Education, LCWU, has dedicated nearly a decade to community service and outreach. She envisions the Centre for Active Citizenship is as a dynamic platform where both students and faculty recognize their agency to effect positive change within and beyond the university. The Social Action Projects within this framework empower students to take ownership of their communities. By actively working to improve and uplift their surroundings, students become socially responsible citizens. These projects will be intentionally designed to be sustainable and scalable, ensuring lasting impact.
Faculty members, through the Active Citizens Program, leverage their diverse expertise to engage in community-based projects. Collaborating with stakeholders, they will be expected to address critical issues such as literacy, poverty, health, environmental sustainability, and human rights—aligning their work with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Beyond the classroom, the Centre extends education’s reach. It empowers students and faculty to actively address pressing local and global challenges. It is hoped that these active citizens will build bridges, promote peace, and drive positive change for a better future. Importantly, the program doesn’t end with graduation; alumni will be encouraged to continue their active citizenship journey, influencing policy, volunteering, and championing causes throughout their lives.
