The official timings of the seminar were from 11:00 am to 1:00p.m arranged in the hall of Department of Biotechnology. Students from both Zoology and various other departments were invited to attend this seminar that focused on the issue of prevalence of breast cancer in Pakistan, ‘reluctance’ as the major cause for its prevalence and various preventive measures and self-screening modules a woman should know.
The guests were seated in the hall by 10:55 am and the seminar started at 11:10a.m with the recitation of Holy Quran. After the recitation, Professor Arshad Cheema was then invited to share his views and experience with regard to breast cancer and its patients. He began by introducing himself and sharing his ‘alma maters’ as an opening to the students. He shared the statistical fact that every 8th women in Pakistan (>1 crore alive today) will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. His entire presentation then gave a small, but tentatively eye opening insight to the various kinds of breast cancer patients he and his team has dealt with in the past. Each patient presented various reasons to deny the existence of such a cancer in them at first place until it exceeded beyond the metastatic stage. He also focused on tobacco as a major reason for various type of cancer including lung, throat and mouth. If smoking and tobacco intake is reduced, many cases of breast cancer may be avoided.
Decorum of the hall was well maintained during the entire event and all the students attentively listened to the very informative seminar put forth. Mr. Ross Masud was then invited on the stage after Mr. Cheema. Mr. Ross Masud shared his views with regard to preventing a disease like breast cancer. After his brief session, all the male guest were escorted for refreshments while the students were now addressed by Dr. Fariha to give a personal self-screening session to women only. Her presentation explained the need for Breast Self-Examination and why it should be done. She then explained various methods and techniques to self-examine any hidden changes before time. Several doubts and questions were taken from the audience with regard to breast cancer. All the questions were put very well in an answer by Dr. Fariha.
The seminar was then closed by thanking the guest for taking out time from their busy schedule. Several pamphlets on breast cancer were then distributed to the audience and the rest of the guests were taken for refreshments. All in all, the two hour seminar proved to be very informative and thought provoking for the potential women who now look forward to more of such events. |

In Pakistan, this innovative technology is first time introduced in Southern Punjab by collaboration of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, SoyPak, Pvt. Ltd., Punjab Fish Farm and Lahore College For Women University, Lahore, which has brought solutions of major problems of Aquaculture industry of Pakistan which include less production per unit area, high cost, low FCR, wastage of water, poor aeration, challenged water quality and risk to natural resources. Introduction of IPRS technology in Pakistan materializes the prime minister’s vision for development of Fisheries and Aquaculture industry in Pakistan. This first IPRS commercial and research demo site in Pakistan has been established with partial funds provided under Technology Development Fund of Higher Education Commission. Technical Consultancy by R.S.N. Janjua (SoyPak, Pvt. Ltd.) while Kamran Maqsood (Punjab Fish Farm) is the first progressive fish farmer who adopted this technology.
