On December 6th, the Mumkin Alliance, in collaboration with the Gender Studies Department of Lahore College for Women University, orchestrated a commemorative event for the 16 Days of Activism aimed at combating Gender-Based Violence against women. The gathering drew participation from esteemed guest speakers, the revered Head of Department, faculty members, and students of the Gender Studies Department. The primary objective was to instill awareness and comprehension regarding the prevention of Gender-Based Violence.
The event commenced with a competition showcasing projects by Gender Studies students. The most outstanding projects received certification from Mr. Omer Aftab, the CEO of White Ribbon, who commended the students’ efforts. Emphasizing the imperative of translating theoretical studies into practical actions, Mr. Omer underscored the significance of delving into the theme of ‘Men and Masculinity.’ He advocated for a comprehensive examination of how men navigate a diverse society.
Mr. Salman Abid articulated the viewpoint that practical exercises compel individuals to adopt alternative perspectives. Stressing the need to address the male burden in society, he asserted the importance of understanding Gender Socialization and promoting digital reflection on pertinent issues. He urged a departure from customary practices and outlined a five-step approach: treating every person as a human being, ownership, organization, unity, and investment, with a particular emphasis on investing in girls across various domains.
Dr. Fouzia Khanam underscored the crucial aspect that every woman should be attuned to her physical, mental, and social well-being to comprehend her rights fully. She shed light on the detrimental impact of toxic relationships, emphasizing that such situations form a chain perpetuated from mothers to daughters. Dr. Khanam advocated for women to focus on their careers and achieve independence, drawing from her experiences to raise awareness about gender-based victimization.
Dr. Uzma contributed a noteworthy point, highlighting the pivotal role of ‘communication’ in relationships. She suggested that honing communication skills is essential for fostering peaceful relationships and conversations, encouraging everyone to prioritize learning effective communication.
Ms. Syeda Rozy proclaimed that revolutions are instigated by women and lamented the loss of female identity in the swift currents of society. She criticized media portrayals, particularly in dramas, for perpetuating a negative image of women. Drawing from personal experience, she asserted that women can be their own adversaries, emphasizing the need for both knowledge and training to address societal inequalities.
Prof. Dr. Zohra Kiyani commended the 16 Days of Activism as a commendable initiative for students, acknowledging the privileged environment despite prevailing social pressures. She urged resilience in the face of challenges for future success.
In the concluding segment, attendees engaged the distinguished guest speakers with inquiries, generating recommendations stemming from the enlightening session.
