The Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) hosted its 1st International Conference on Contemporary Challenges in Global Sustainability, themed "Navigating towards a Resilient Future with a Focus on Economic, Environmental, and Gender Dynamics." The Departments of Economics, Environmental Sciences, and Gender and Development Studies jointly organized this conference.
The conference started with an opening ceremony where Prof. Dr. Shagufta Naz, the Vice Chancellor, highlighted the significance of women's empowerment and entrepreneurship in Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal extended a warm welcome to the attendees. The keynote speeches were presented by international experts, Prof. Dr. Paul Liu and Prof. Dr. Jenny Dissen, as well as national authorities, including Ms. Sumaira Samad and Prof. Dr. Aneeq Ahmad.
A significant session during the conference, titled "Gender and Climate Change" took place on June 25, 2024, and was facilitated by the Department of Gender and Development Studies. Prof. Dr. Raana Malik, Chairperson of the Gender Studies Department at University of the Punjab, Lahore, chaired the session. Dr. Uzma Ashiq Khan, Assistant Professor in Gender and Development Studies at LCWU, served as the co-chair. The session was moderated by Ms. Maryam Batool, Lecturer in Gender and Development Studies at LCWU.

Prof. Dr. Sarah Shahed, Professor of Psychology, Forman Christian College University, chaired the session. Dr. Asma Mageed, Lecturer, Kinnaird College, Lahore, served as the co-chair. The session was moderated by Ms. Farah Adil, Lecturer in Gender and Development Studies at LCWU. Another significant session during the conference, titled "Gender and Social Justice" took place on June 26, 2024, and was facilitated by the Department of Gender and Development Studies. Dr. Irum Rubab, Director, Women, and Development Centre, University of Home Economics, Lahore, chaired the session. Dr. Samina Riaz, Lecturer, Gender and Development studies, LCWU served as the co-chair. The session was moderated by Ms. Syeda Maryam Batool in Gender and Development Studies at LCWU.
The International Conference on "Contemporary Challenges in Global Sustainability" has successfully concluded on June 27, 2024, offering key policy recommendations for sustainable development. The event underscored the significance of local initiatives and the influential role of social media in advancing sustainability. Muhammad Ahmad Khan, Punjab Assembly Speaker, highlighted the government's dedication to harmonizing economic growth with environmental conservation. Additionally, Professor Dr. Shagufta Naz, Vice Chancellor of LCWU, emphasized the vital role of education in nurturing a sustainable future. She called on participants to implement the insights gained during the conference. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal stressed the importance of grassroots governance and the crucial role of women in attaining sustainability objectives. During scientific sessions, experts discussed strategies to enhance environmental assets to combat transboundary pollution. Researchers presented their work on improving role of gender equality to attain goals for sustainable developments.
