In partnership with Walk with Ilyas (MammaCare), the Alberuni Physics Society and the LCWU Directorate of Students Affairs hosted a certification programme on self-breast examination to raise awareness of breast cancer on March 4, 2024, at Iqra Auditorium. Prof. Dr. Zohra Nazir Kayani organised the awareness workshop, while Dr. Mohammed Ilyas Khan, an international qualified lactation consultant, served as the course instructor. The purpose of the awareness session was to assist staff and students in preventing cancer as early identification is critical to the treatment and recovery from breast cancer. Dr. Ilyas covered topics such as breast anatomy, cancer causes, early detection, and preventive methods that can improve a patient's prognosis and lengthen their survival. He emphasised the importance of daily self examination however mammograms can identify cancer cells even before they manifest during a physical examination. Additionally, he recommended that all women over 40 should have a mammography at least once a year.Dr. Najma Afzal Khan, an ex-MPA and the event's chief guest, stressed the importance of having a breast cancer hospital in each district of Punjab during her speech. Prof. Dr. Shagufta Naz, VC LCWU, the event's Patron-in-cheif, commends the Physics department for planning this awareness workshop. An engaging question and answer round followed the presentation.
