First Aquaculture facility of Department of Zoology

First Aquaculture facility of Department of Zoology, Lahore College For Women University was inagurated by worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor. Multiple foreigner and Pakistani subject specialists and researchers also visited the facility. This facility was established under Higher Education Commission funded project entitled" Production of all female population of Silver carp by 17-alpha methyltestosterone immersion and dietary treatment". LCWU provided all necessary funds for civil work. Dr. Shafaq Fatima Assistant Professor of Zoology is principal investigator while Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor is co- PI in this project. This facility can rear fish biomass upto approximately 650kg in one season. Both juvenile and large fish can be accomodated in established facility when required. It will provide vast space and opportunities to conduct practicals, research trials and future projects. It might be used for commercial purpose as well to involve female students in practical and economic application of Aquaculture and fish farming. This facility will be a milestone towards establishment of discipline of fisheries and Aquaculture at LCWU.

A one day Seminar on “Breast Cancer Awareness”

A one day Seminar on “Breast Cancer Awareness” was organized by Department of Zoology, LCWU, Lahore on 17th October, 2018. Faculty and students actively participated in the event. Mr. Ross Masud-Chairman Shehzada Begum Cancer Prevention Institute and Prof. Dr. Arshad Cheema-Dean Postgraduate Medical Institute and Director University of Lahore Cancer center addressed the seminar. Speakers talked about in depth regarding “cancer prevention” and “Why do we need an early diagnosis of breast cancer?” Discussions were made with students and faculty members in detail.Prof.Dr.Farkhanda Manzoor Dugal got Best University Teacher Award on 21st February 2018 in a ceremony at HEC Islamabad

Ms. Rehana Shahida a registered PhD student of Lahore College For Women University, Lahore Reg. No. 09-Ph.D/LCWU-15752 has completed her research work for Ph.D in the subject of Zoology, titled “Vascular inflammation attributed by hyperglycemia and cytokines among impaired glucose tolerant and type II diabetic subjects” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tasnim Farasat, Professor of Zoology, Lahore College For Women University, Lahore (Supervisor), Dr. Shagufta Naz, Assistant Professor of Zoology, Lahore College For Women University, Lahore (Co-supervisor) and Dr. Shah Jahan Malik, Department of Immunology, UHS, Lahore (Co-supervisor). She successfully defended her thesis on 12.12.2017 and recommended for award of Ph.D in Zoology.

PhD Defense of Ms. Rehana Shahida

Ms. Farah Ashfaq a registered PhD student of Lahore College For Women University, Lahore Reg. No. 09-Ph.D/LCWU/15753 has completed her research work for Ph.D in the subject of Zoology, titled “A Study Of Circulating Inflammatory Markers And Adipokines Associated With Obesity” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tasnim Farasat, Professor of Zoology, Lahore College For Women University, Lahore (Supervisor), Dr. Shagufta Naz, Assistant Professor of Zoology, Lahore College For Women University, Lahore (Co-supervisor) and Dr. Shah Jahan Malik, Department of Immunology, UHS, Lahore (Co-supervisor). She successfully defended her thesis on 16.08.2017 and recommended for award of Ph.D in Zoology.

Ms. Saffora Riaz a registered PhD student of Lahore College For Women University, Lahore Reg. No. 10-Ph.D/LCWU/18026 has completed her research work for Ph.D in the subject of Zoology, titled “Analysis Of Organophosphates Pesticide In Blood Samples Of Agricultural Workers Of District Gujranwala Punjab” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor, Professor of Zoology, Lahore College For Women University, Lahore (Supervisor), Dr. Nasir Mahmood, UHS, Lahore (Co-supervisor). She successfully defended her thesis on 18.08.2017 and recommended for award of Ph.D in Zoology.

PhD Awarded

Dr. Sandra Catherine Zainathan a renowned fish virologist from School of Fisheries & Aquaculture Sciences (FISHA), University of Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia visited Department of Zoology, LCWU on 7th February, 2017. She discussed the opportunities of collaboration and student exchange between Department of Zoology, LCWU and FISHA.

Visit of foreign faculty to Department of Zoology, LCWU

Dengue Prevention and Control Cell, LCWU and Departmental of Zoology, LCWU organized a two-days workshop to raise awareness against Vector borne diseases/ PCR based techniques in Biological research on 19th-20th December, 2016 Zoology department’s Seminar hall. Various eminent instructors and speakers from LCWU, GCU and CMH, Lahore delivered comprehensive and informative lectures. Number of students attended the workshop. At the end chairperson of Zoology department Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor awarded certificates to the speakers, organizers and participants.

Two-day workshop to raise awareness against Vector borne diseases of public health importance

Department of Zoology, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), in collaboration with FEEDing Pakistan Program of American Soybean Association (ASA) funded by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) organized a Three-Day Seminar on “Aquaculture & Feeding Management” and Study Tour to Fish Feed Mills and Fish Ponds from 03-05 August 2016. This Seminar Cum Training was organized especially for the Students & Faculty of Fisheries and Aquaculture. On First Day, 03-AUG-2016, The Experts of Feed Technology and Pond & Feed Management were invited and a special session of presentation was carried out. Mr. Mirza Zafar M. Khan have well demonstrated the students about Benefits of Soy-Based Feed for Aquaculture and Feed Technology.

On the other hand, the Pond Management & Feeding Management were elaborated by Rtd. Director General Mr. Noor Elahi. An Expert talk on Soy utilization & its Statistics was covered by R.S.N Janjua, Country Representative ASA/WISHH/SOYPAK. On 4th AUG, 2016 the Study Tour to Two Fish Feed Mills (Oryza Feed Mill & Kashmir Feeds) and a Fish Pond (Sial Fish Pond) was arranged. This was the first exposure of female student to the feed mills and the ponds.

On Third Day, 05-AUG-2016, Miss. Sarah Yasir & Miss. Noureen Anjum attended the seminar and Miss. Sarah Yasir gave presentation on business plan. The participants & organizers were given certificate by the Country Director R.S.N Janjua and Head of Zoology Department, Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor. The speakers were awarded with shield of appreciation.

News Report of three-Day Seminar “Aquaculture & Feed Management” 03-05 AUG, 2016

Department of Zoology at Lahore College for Women, Lahore (LCWU) and the World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide opportunities for the students at LCWU for participation in on-campus International Eco-Internship Programme. This MOU will also enable students to work with WWF-Pakistan on various projects, campaigns and environmental education initiatives.

Prof. Dr. Uzma Qureshi Vice Chancellor, and Ms Asma Ezdi GM WWF-Pakistan signed the MOU.Mr. Usman Ijaz will be the focal person for the Eco-Internship Programme from WWF-Pakistan while Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor, Head of Department Zoology will coordinate on behalf of Zoology Department at Lahore College for Women University, Lahore.

REPORT ON CELEBRATION OF ANTI DENGUE DAY

Reference to letter No: 453/41 dated 442016, Anti Dengue day was celebrated at Lahore College for Women University on 6/ 4/ 2016 for the prevention, control and management of dengue. University Dengue Prevention Committee including faculty, staff, students and administration did physical monitoring of the premises every day.

Awareness seminar was conducted for students, faculty, administrative and support staff and for the families of employees residing in the University. Pamphlets were prepared and distributed. Posters were also prepared and displayed for awareness within University and for general masses. Anti-Dengue walk was also arranged.

Prof Dr. Uzma Qureshi Vice Chancellor, LCWU addressed the seminar and appreciated the activities carried out by dengue cell.

First International Aquaculture 3 day Conference and Tilapia Cooking Exhibition at LCWU

First International Aquaculture 3 day (7-9 January, 2016)Conference and first Tilapia Fish Cooking Exhibition was organized by Department of Zoology, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), Lahore in collaboration with FEEDing Pakistan Program (Promoting Aquaculture Sector) of American Soybean Association, funded by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and University of Arizona, USA.

Prof. Dr. Uzma Qureshi, Vice Chancellor LCWU gave welcome address to the guests. Mr. R.S.N. Janjua, country representative Soy Pak (ASA/WISHH), Pakistan highlighted the Development of Tilapia Aquaculture sector in Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Kevin Fitzsimmons Aquaculture specialist from University of Arizona USA talked about the World Aquaculture development and opportunities for women. Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor, Head of Zoology Department LCWU talked about Perspective of Fisheries and Aquaculture Discipline at the Zoology Department and said that department has strong foreign qualified technical experts on Aquaculture. Four Higher Education Commission funded Aquaculture research projects have also been awarded to their Aquaculture experts, Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor, Dr. Ghazala Jabeen, Dr. Zakia Kanwal and Dr. Shafaq Fatima.

A cooking Exhibition in collaboration with the department of Home Economics was also arranged among the participants for making dishes with Tilapia. Experienced judges were present to evaluate the dishes. Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, Incharge Faculty of Natural Sciences, LCWU and Prof. Dr. Shagufta Naz, Director Research, LCWU distributed certificates and shields among the participants.

Overall, Conference was focused on the Development of Aquaculture and role of fish in addressing the food security of Pakistan. Conference and First Tilapia fish cooking competition provided opportunities to young female students to understand benefits of using Soybean in quality Aquaculture production.

Use of mt COI sequences for the identification of subterranean termite species from Punjab, Pakistan

“Use of mt COI sequences for the identification of subterranean termite species from Punjab, Pakistan” at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) November 15-18, 2015, at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minnesota. I won travel grant from HEC, Islamabad. I am also member of entomological society of America. My work on termites was highly appreciated and it positive experience of sharing research and collaborations with eminent entomologists of the world.

Biostatistics Tools in Biological Research

A two days training workshop (14th 15th October, 2015) on "Biostatistics tools in Biological Research" organized at Department of Zoology,Lahore College for Women University Lahore, It was excellent opportunity to train future scientists of Pakistan. Resource person was Prof.dr.M.Tariq Javed from University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Director Research Prof.dr Shugufta Naz distributed certificates among participants.

Book on Mosquitoes

Prof Dr Farkhanda Manzoor wrote a book on “Mosquitoes the Urban Pests". This is a first book written in Pakistan on mosquitoes. It gives an idea about biology, behaviour and control strategies of mosquitoes.

Fight Against Dengue

To prepare the whole campus actively against the dengue, the students and the faculty members of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) Lahore gathered in the Seminar Hall where varsity’s medical officer Dr. Hafsa delivered a lecture and highlighted the preventions for dengue. Care taking vice chancellor Dr. Tahira Buttar chaired the seminar. Director student affairs Prof. Shireen Asad, director administration Ali Rizvi, Registrar Uzma , senior estate officer Sheikh Ghias and other senior management was among the participants.

Dr. Hafsa in her address told that LCWU has launched a special campaign against dengue and Vice Chancellor has formed the Dengue prevention and management committee to supervise the campaign. LCWU is acting upon an action plan for insecticide spray in view of the instruction of the Government of the Punjab. The participants were briefed that whole campus of LCWU has been fumigated this kind of spray will be exercised on weekly basis.

Senior estate officer Sheikh Ghias told that his office has decided to upgrade sewerage system and to dump all the solid waste with immediate effect. A Medical Camp, on the instruction of Vice Chancellor, has been established in the Campus where students as well as staff will be examined and, if necessary, will be referred to hospitals for further treatment. Medical Officer of LCWU, will supervise the camp.

Anti-Dengue Day

Under the supervision of Vice chancellor, Prof dr Farkhanda Manzoor, Incharge Dengue prevention and control cell, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) organized seminar against Dengue in the auditorium. Students from fine arts and Zoology department made posters and display cards against Dengue prevention. Dr Mubashir Hasan from Health department and prof dr Aslam Khan from university of Health Sciences delivered lectures on Mosquitoes and its control. Dr Farzana Nazir, MPA, talked about Govt efforts to control Dengue in Punjab. Dr Farkhanda Manzoor told that WHO recommended equipments, insecticides and safety kits to spray man were purchased from the funds approved by Prof. dr Sabiha Mansoor, VC LCWU for Dengue control. Dr. Sabiha distributed shields to speakers.

A team of Dengue Research Group visited various places at hostel areas. LCWU teams also continued spray of insecticides against dengue.

Bioavailability of Bifenthrin and Fipronil against subterranean termites in various soils at Lahore

Dr. Farkhanda Manzoor presented her paper on “Bioavailability of Bifenthrin and Fipronil against subterranean termites in various soils at Lahore” in the IRG 44th Annual meeting International Research group on wood protection held on 16th to 20th June, 2013.

She also addressed as Keynote speaker on 1st International Conference on sensing for Industry Control, Communication and security technologies, organized by Indus University on 24th to 26th June, 2013 HEJ Karachi, her topic was Biosensors for Termite Control. She was also awarded Productive Scientist award by PASTIC, 3rd April, 2013.

  • Zoological Society organized a seminar on “Prevention and Control of Malaria” on 25th April, 2013. Department also organized Blood Screening Test for malaria diagnosis in collaboration with DG Health Services Govt. of Punjab Lahore.
