Department of Gender and Development Studies, LCWU collaborated with the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences ,LUMS for the organization of an international conference on “Gender, Piety, Secularity: Conversations with Saba Mahmood (1962-2018)” which took place from December 10th to 13th at the LUMS campus and the Alhamra Arts Council, Lahore.This International Conference was held in honor of the late, eminent Pakistani anthropologist Saba Mahmood, who was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of California Berkeley until her untimely passing in 2018. In this conference speakers from the USA, UK, Canada, as well as from different Universities of Pakistan presented.The keynote address was delivered by Professor Shahzad Bashir (Brown University, USA) titled, “Seeking Knowledge and Being in Early Colonial South Asia.” This conference provided new directions for research in Pakistan inspired by Saba Mahmood, on the broad themes of gender studies, Islamic studies, politics and rights.The faculty and students of the Gender and Development Studies department also attended this conference.
Dr. Uzma Ashiq ( Assistant Professor ,Gender and Development Studies Department, LCWU talked in this conference about the importance of gender and research in the literature by citing Judith butler's work about Saba Mehmood.
